Logging Days in Blind River
Logging Days In Blind River
This 45-minute video, produced by the J..J. McFadden Lumber Company Ltd in 1955 of Blind River, Ontario traces the lumber production process from stump to ship load. It has been carefully archived by the Blind River Timber Village Museum Museum | Blind River Marine Park. The video provides a very folksy narrative telling the story of logging and the men (yup pretty much all of them) who did the cutting, hauling, cooking, river driving, sawing and loading on ships for export to aid in post war reconstruction. The McFadden mill was, for almost 40 years, the world's largest white pine sawmill east of the Rockies. The great Mississagi Fire of 1948 put a serious constraint on their wood supply and the mill closed in 1969. For those interested in learning more about logging history of that era I recommend the Carl Kauffmann book, Logging Days in Blind River Logging Days in Blind River Book | Blind River Marine Park available through the Blind River logging museum.
