Dr Mark Kuhlberg Wins Forest History Society’s (US) Prestigious Writer’s Award

The Forest History Society (US) https://foresthistory.org/ just announced the results of the annual competition for their Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Book Award and we are delighted to share the results.

Our own Mark Kuhlberg, Professor of History at Laurentian University, current FHO Board Member and past-President of FHO came out on top in spite of stiff competition. The Forest History Society’s Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Book Award rewards superior scholarship in forest and conservation history. The award is given to authors who have exhibited fresh insight into a topic and whose narrative analysis is clear, inventive, and thought-provoking. His recent book, Killing Bugs for Business and Beauty: Canada’s Aerial War against Forest Pests, 1913–1930, clearly captivated the review panel and will no doubt continue to entertain and educate all those that read it. The very readable book chronicles the very early days of experimental aerial applications of pesticides to fight budworm in eastern Canada and hemlock looper in BC. The pesticides used were actually in the form of a dust, which was not only very hard to calibrate and apply and laced with arsenic but dropped from hastily modified aircraft in the early years of aviation. It is a fascinating read and I recommend it to you. Available at all discerning bookstores and on-line at https://www.amazon.ca/Killing-Bugs-Business-Beauty-1913-1930/dp/1487508972.

I ask you to support our FHO scholar by picking up a copy. The announcement in the FHS Newsletter can be found here: https://foresthistory.org/awards-fellowships/weyerhaeuser-award/
